Human Herpes Viruses are a family of viruses that once infected, persist in the body long term. They are able to change between latent and active form in the body, reactivating when the environment becomes hospitable due to stress, inflammation, nutrient depletion, pharmaceutical drugs or toxic exposure. Even in their latent form, they exude viral proteins that perturb the immune system and initiate or perpetuate inflammation and immune dysfunction. This family of viruses are directly implicated in a host of serious illness, including many common and serious autoimmune diseases (SLE, Sjogrens, Hashimoto’s, Scleroderma, MS, RA, coeliac disease) and chronic fatigue syndrome, amongst others. These viruses may be a primary trigger for illness, or may be activated due to illness or stress in the body and becomes an independent perpetuator of ill-health. Up to 95% of the population are thought to be infected with one of more of these viruses, and it is imperative to rule in or out their involvement in any on-going, inflammatory or immune mediated issue.
