Do I need a blood draw?

A sizeable selection of tests we provide require you to have a blood test. In order to help you find a location, which could be your own local clinic or GP, you need to understand the different requirements.

FINGER PRICK TEST

These tests are really convenient and can be done at home. They consist of a small collection card on which to place several drops of your blood . As the name suggests a small sterile and non reusable lancet makes a tiny prick on your finger tip, allowing you to gently squeeze 3 or 4 droplets of blood onto the collection card. This is simple, convenient and with minimal discomfort.

SERUM/PLASMA CENTRIFUGED DRAW

Serum / Plasma is a clear, yellowish coloured fluid which is a component of your blood. To obtain it, phlebotomists draw (collect) a regular blood sample and then have to separate it from its other components.

They do this through a process known as centrifugation, wherby the blood filled collection test tube is placed into a machine which spins at 2500-3500 revolutions per minute, until it separates (similar to oil and water) finishing with the clear yellow liquid on the top and the dark blood components on the bottom.

This process is not normally available at your local GP or general private clinic and so you probably will need to visit a hospital for this service.

STANDARD BLOOD DRAW

Unless stipulated that your test sample requires centrifugation, you can assume it is a standard blood draw.

This means you can contact your local GP or any private practice to see if they can arrange a blood draw for you, which you may find is more convenient.

Alternatively you may wish to choose from our national phlebotomy partner network which covers the UK, Central London and growing parts of Ireland. Use the blood draw sites link on this page.
